Other "Other Hupps":

In addition to the Hupp groups in the other sections of this book, there are also some smaller groups which are lumped together in this section.

Hupps of Wells County, Indiana

Most of the Hupps of Wells County, Indiana, descend from John Hupp and Zeporah Coles. John was born in Pennsylvania about 1816. The 1850 census lists him as a shoemaker, but gives his age as "44", or born in 1806. He is also found in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, aged 44 and 54, respectively, so I figure that in 1850, the census taker simply misheard. He may descend (a grandson) from the patriarch Everhard Hupp, but no line has been established. Zeporah was born in Ohio, as was their first child, John who was born in 1838. All of the rest of the children were born in Indiana, indicating that this couple moved there about 1840. They lived in Liberty Township.

Wells County is south of Fort Wayne. The county seat is Bluffton.

John and Zeporah's descendants continued to live in that area, but some moved away, and now many remain now. I do not have contact with any of their descendants.

There was one other Hupp family that lived in Wells County--that of Henry Hupp, son of Michael, son of Everhard. He moved there about 1862, can be found in the 1870 census, but died before 1880. His family is listing is:

It may be that John was Henry's older brother, the firstborn of his family, and that Henry followed him to Wells County. If so, this had not been recorded among the Everhard Hupp records. This is not unusual, though, as neither were Michaels sons James and Henry, who were listed in the 1850 census. Michael Hupp married Hannah Van Sickle in October of 1814, so they definitely could be John's parents, but there is no confirmation of this.

The Missouri Hupps

Those referred to as the "Missouri Hupps" descend from John T. Hupp & Eliza Grant or Aaron Hupp & Mary Homan. Both John and Aaron lived together in Missouri, in Morgan County, Osage Town ship in 1850. In 1860, they had started their families, and were living in Cooper County, Otterville Township. John and Aaron were almost certainly brothers, and since they were born the same month and year, they were also twins. They were born in Virginia in 1820. That would also include what is now West Virginia. I have not been able to connect them with any family I know of in Virginia or West Virginia in 1820.

John moved to Colorado, and Aaron remained in Cooper County until his death in 1901. Ray Davis of Tucson, Arizona has filled me in on Johnï¿½s descendants. The little I have on Aaron's family is from the censuses plus a few courthouse records also sent from Ray Davis.

Cooper County is near the center of Missouri, mostly south of Interstate 70, west of Columbia. The county seat is Boonville, and Otterville is in the southwest corner of the county. Otterville is slightly less than 40 miles south of Slater, which is where Abram Hupp, a grandson of the patriarch Balser, settled in the 1860s.

Morgan County is directly south of Cooper County. It may be that Cooper County was formed from Morgan County in the 1850s.

Late Immigrating Hupps

Late Immigrating Hupps are defined as those who came to America after 1800, of which the earliest ones I know of were after 1840. The largest group I know of descend from Henry and Ferdinand Hupp (initially "Happ"), who settled in the village of Fulda in Noble County, Ohio. Because of their proximity to the descendants of the patriarch Phillip Hupp, I included lists of their descendants if Hupps from Duck Creek. This subsections contains other late immigrating groups.

Most other Hupps found in Michigan are also late immigrants, but they do not lend themselves readily to family lists. Most late immigrating Hupp families were fairly small, having only one or two children, and they lived in the cities (this applies all across the U.S., not just in Michigan). It is difficult to track them from census to census, perhaps due to inconstancy of name spelling, or perhaps because censuses may often miss them.

Some non-late immigrating Hupps in Michigan were those that started the Hupmobile manufacture, and their relatives. The Hupmobile was started by Robert C. and Louis G. Hupp in 1909. They were ousted from their corporation in 1922, but Hupmobiles were manufactured until about 1947. The two Hupp brothers here were grandsons of Abraham Hupp of Salem, Virginia, who was a grandson of the patriarch Balser Hupp of New Market, Virginia.

In Indiana, another late-immigrating Hupp family settled. They lived in the area between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. All of the children of William and Augusta were born in Indiana.
