Emanuel Hupp

There is some controversy as to whether Emanuel Hupp is a son of Phillip Hupp and Mary Buzzard. He never is listed with George, Philip, Francis, or Daniel, except on my lists. Also,

descendants seem to regard the family home as Wayne County, rather Monroe County, Ohio. The death record of Kinsey Hupp, Emanuel's son, says that he was born in Wayne County, Ohio.

But the fact is, the family of Emanuel Hupp was living in Monroe County in 1830, in Elk Township. Wayne County was where Elijah Hupp, another of Emanuel's sons, moved to in the 1860's. Kinsey and John continued to live in Monroe County a little longer, and then moved to Wirt County, WV about 1880.

I regard the proximity of Emanuel's family, plus the lack of any other Hupps except for Phillip's family, as evidence that Emanuel was a son of Phillip. He is too old to be a grandson, but not too young to be a son of Phillip, since it was normal then for parents to keep having children into their

40's. Furthermore, the story about Phillip Hupp hunting Indians was passed down in this family. I know this is only circumstantial evidence, but it fits, and no other alternative has been given.

This Emanuel Hupp is not to be confused with Emanuel Hupp, son of Balser, who also had a wife named Mary, was about the same age, and moved into Ohio. He lived from 1792 to 1836

and moved from New Market, Va to Champaign County, Ohio. For his family, see section D in my book, HUPPs from the SHENANDOAH VALLEY, VIRGINIA after the American Revolution.

Emanuel Hupp of Monroe County, Ohio married Mary Davis, and here is a reconstruction of his family, according to the 1850 census. Earlier censuses indicate there were other children who died in childhood. In 1840 two boys and two girls of the oldest 5 children are missing who were evident in the 1830 census.

OX-2

Kinsey Hupp, son of Emanuel Hupp and Mary Davis, lived in Elk Township of Noble County, Ohio for several years, where all of his children were born. Then in 1879 or 1880, the family, along with that of Kinsey's brother John, moved to Wirt County, West Virginia, in the Tucker district. Kinsey died sometime between 1880 and 1900, and his wife remarried, to a Vancamp. She lived in Warren Township of Washington County, Ohio in 1900, along with her children Theodore and Martha, but not with her husband, so she must have been widowed again. Searches in Wirt County for Kinsey Hupp turned up nothing.

Every source I have found seems to spell the name of Kinsey Hupp's wife differently. The only other name that comes close in spelling variation is "Balser". The censuses spell it "Julette", "Julieta", "Julitie". Other records give "Julia". Her maiden name is also always spelled differently, including "Dreh".
