Section 1a

 

Pearisburg to Narrows

Pearisburg, VA with GET route (magenta dots)—it follows the Appalachian Trail here.

 

Parking

 

Near “North” end of section: From I-77 in West Virginia Exit 9, take US 460 east 22.1 mile to Pearisburg, turn right to go north on VA 100, and go 0.4 miles and find AT Parking on right. 

Near “South” end of section: From I-77 in West Virginia Exit 9, take US 460 east 18.2 miles to Narrows, turn left on VA 61 (south) and go 0.6 mile to downtown Narrows.  Turn left on VA 100, go 0.3 miles, turn right on Northview Street and go 1.2 miles to end of road.  Parking at Mill Creek Park. 

“South” end of section: From I-77 in West Virginia Exit 9, take US 460 east 18.2 miles to Narrows, turn left on VA 61 (south) and go 0.6 mile to downtown Narrows. 

 

Shuttle (3.6 miles)

 

“North” (VA 100 crossing) to “south”: Take VA 100 north 3.6 miles to downtown Narrows, at intersection with VA 61.    

 

“South” to “north” (VA 100 crossing): From the intersection of VA 61 with VA 100, take VA 100 south 3.6 miles to Pearisburg.  Find AT parking on left side of road.

Services: Pearisburg has many services: (distances from AT crossing of Cross Avenue): Holiday Lodge Pearisburg – 0.9 mile, Hardee’s – 1.0 mile, Post Office (24134) – 1.1 miles, Papa’s Pizzeria & Subs – 1.2 miles, E-Z Way Laundromat – 1.3 miles Pizza Hut – 1.5 miles, Angels Rest Hiker’s Haven – 1.7 miles.  These are not in a line.  More services are at greater distances. 

        There are also some services at Narrows—see Section 2a for those.

   0.0       VA 100 Trailhead, elev. 1615’.  AT Parking on east side of road.  Follow AT across VA 100 into field. 

   1.1       Cross paved Cross Avenue (VA 793; 634 in AT Guides), elev. 2005’. 

   3.1       Reach Angels Rest sign, with path to right 0.1 mile to view rock with view of Pearisburg and mountains beyond New River. 

   3.2       Reach crest of Pearis Mountain, elev. 3550’. 

   3.8       View of Wilburn Valley to left.

   3.9       High point of section on Pearis Mountain, elev. 3765’.

   5.8       After passing under power line, trail descends from crest to right. 

   6.1       Leave Appalachian Trail on forest road (no signs) to sharp right. 

   6.3       Turn sharp left on forest road (Old Rhodie Trail, no signs). 

   7.1       Intersection with Piney Road.  Keep right. 

   7.2       Forest Road intersection.  Weezer Trail continues ahead, turn left onto the Catwalk Trail (no sign). 

   7.6       Side trail 0.1 mile to waterfall to left. 

   7.8       Side trail (no sign) 0.05 mile to waterfall to left. 

   8.1       Catwalk Trail (no sign) continues uphill to right.  Bear left, downhill, on Waterfall Trail (no sign). 

   8.7       Weezer Trail goes right uphill and ahead. Continue ahead. 

   8.8       Campsite with Shelter at dam across Mill Creek to left. 

   9.1       Mill Creek Nature Park trailhead parking and gate across road, elev. 1910’.  Continue ahead, downhill, on gravel road. 

   9.3       Pass an open gate then intersection with Poplar Street to right.  Pavement begins. 

10.1       Sidewalk begins on left. 

10.3       Turn left on VA 100, Main Street. Sidewalk on left.

 10.4       Pass Narrows United Methodist Church on left. 

10.5       Narrows Post Office (24124) on right. 

10.6       Downtown Narrows, intersection of VA 61 (Monroe Street) and VA 100, elev. 1535’.  GET continues to right on VA 61 into Section 1b.

 

 

Trail Description, “South” to “North”

   0.0       Downtown Narrows, intersection of VA 61 (Monroe Street) and VA 100 (Main Street), elev. 1535’.  Great Eastern Trail follows VA 100.  Sidewalks on both sides of street.

   0.1       Narrows Post Office (24124) on left.  Sidewalk continues only on right of street.

   0.2       Pass Narrows United Methodist Church on right.

   0.3       Turn right on Northview Street.  Sidewalk on right of street for three blocks. 

   1.3       Poplar Street to right.  Pavement ends. Just after that is a gate, usually open. 

   1.5       Parking on left; closed gate across road.  Mill Creek Nature Park, elev. 1910’.  Continue on gravel road, aka Weezer Trail. 

   1.8       Campsite with Shelter to right at dam across Mill Creek.

   1.9       Butternut Trail turns left, uphill.  Continue ahead on Waterfall Trail (no sign). 

   2.5       Catwalk Trail (no sign) comes down from left and continues ahead.  Continue ahead on Catwalk Trail. 

   2.8       Side trail (no sign) to waterfall to right. 

   3.0       Side trail to waterfall to right. 

   3.5       Intersection with Piney Road. Turn right on Piney Road. 

   3.6       Keep left uphill on Old Rhodie Trail (no sign)

   4.3       Turn right on forest road to right (no signs). 

   4.5       Appalachian Trail junction (no signs).  Turn left. 

   4.8       AT reaches crest of Pearis Mountain at power line.

   6.7       High point of section on Pearis Mountain, elev. 3765’.  

   6.8       View of Wilburn Valley to right.

   7.4       Angels Rest descent begins.

   7.5       Angels Rest sign and side trail to View Rock, with view of Pearisburg and mountains beyond New River.
