Mullens to Twin Falls Campground

   1.    “North” end of section: From I-77 & 64 Exit 42 take WV 16 south 3.6 miles to WV 54 and turn right. Take WV 54 18.6 miles to Mullens.

   2.    “South” end of section: From I-77 & 64 Exit 42 take WV 16 south 3.6 miles to WV 54 and turn right. Take WV 54 13.7 miles to WV 97 and turn right. Take WV 97 2.0 miles, turn left on Poke Hollow Road and go 1.5 miles, turn sharp left on Smokey Ridge Road and go 1.7 miles to Campground and Picnic Area.

 

Shuttle (10.2 miles)

 

“North” to “south”: Follow WV 54 5.0 miles, turn left on WV 97 and go 2.0 miles, turn left on Poke Hollow Road and go 1.5 miles, turn sharp left on Smokey Ridge Road and go 1.7 miles to Campground and Picnic Area.

 

“South” to “north”: Turn around, go back out Smokey Ridge Road 1.7 miles, turn sharp right on Poke Hollow Road and go 1.5 miles. Turn right on WV 97 and go 2.0 miles, turn right on WV 54 and go 5.0 miles to Mullens.

Trail Description, “North” to “South”

   0.0       Intersection of WV 16 (to left) and WV 54 (ahead). “North” end of section. Downtown Mullens and most services are to left, across railroad tracks. GET follows WV 54 ahead.

   1.1       Intersection with Moran Avenue then cross Slab Fork.

   1.2       Intersection with Moran Avenue. To right it is 0.1 mile Welton Bible Chapel and 0.2 mile on Terry St. to Bear Cave Bed & Breakfast.

   1.4       Intersection with Trace Fork Road to left.

   1.6       Intersection with WV 121, Coalfields Expressway to right.

   2.6       After crossing Slab Fork, intersection with CR 54/3 to right.

   4.1       Intersection with Old WV 54 Road to right and Pierpoint Freewill Baptist Church.

   5.0       Maben – Intersection of WV 54 and WV 97, which goes left and straight. Go left (west) on WV 97.

   6.9       Sweet Home Baptist Church to right.

   7.0       Turn left on paved Poke Hollow Road going up.

   7.2       Station Gap. Poke Hollow Road continues into Twin Falls Resort State Park. GET goes up old woods road to left.

   7.4       Turn right on Pathfinder Trail.

   8.2       Turn left on Horsepen Knob Trail.

   8.4       Summit of Horsepen Knob, elev. 2436’.

   8.5       Turn left on Still Run Ridge Trail.

   9.2       At intersection with Pathfinder Trail (to left), turn right.

   9.6       Cross Horsepen Branch.

   9.9       Keep left on roadbed. To right is the road to the amphitheater.

10.7       Cross Bearpen Branch.

10.9       Turn right on wide graded path leading uphill.

11.2       Smokey Ridge Road at the Picnic Area and Campground. “South” end of section. GET continues across road onto Hemlock Trail to continue into Section 4b.

   0.0       Twin Falls Campground on Smokey Ridge Road in Twin Falls Resort State Park. “South” end of section. GET goes down graveled trail with fence on both sides.

   0.3       Turn left on roadbed.

   0.5       Cross Bearpen Branch.

   1.3       Reach Still Run Ridge Trail. Follow that trail to right. Ahead is road to Amphitheater.

   1.6       Cross Horsepen Branch.

   2.0       At intersection with Pathfinder Trail, keep left on Still Run Ridge Trail.

   2.7       Turn right on Horsepen Knob Trail.

   2.8       Summit of Horsepen Knob, elev. 2436’.

   3.0       Turn right on Pathfinder Trail.

   3.8       Turn left on old road bed.

   4.0       Station Gap. Turn right on paved Poke Hollow Road, going out of Twin Falls Resort State Park.

   4.2       Turn right on WV 97.

   4.3       Sweet Home Baptist Church to left.

   6.2       Intersection of WV 97 with WV 54 at Maben. Turn right on WV 54.

   7.1       Intersection with Old WV 54 Road to left and Pierpoint Freewill Baptist Church.

   8.6       Intersection with CR 54/3 to left, then cross Slab Fork.     

   9.6       Intersection with WV 121, Coalfields Expressway to left.

   9.8       Intersection with Trace Fork Road to left.

10.0       Intersection with Moran Avenue. To left it is 0.1 mile Welton Bible Chapel and 0.2 mile on Terry St. to Bear Cave Bed & Breakfast.
