Licking County, Ohio Hupps from Pennsylvania

Background:

Licking County, Ohio had been settled by several groups of Hupps from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, by the 1820s. These families settled mostly in the southern part of the county, in Bowling Green and Licking Townships.

These families were of John Hupp & Catherine Stoutemeyer, from Rockingham County, who settled in Newark, of Samuel Hupp & Margaret Wilson, and of Balser Hupp & Magdalene Knupp.

Reference refers to page #s of Hupps from the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, after the American Revolution, which discusses these families and their descendants.

Of these, only Balser's family has Hupp descendants left in this area.

The family listed in this section descends from Daniel and Mary Hupp, who moved from Pennsylvania to Licking County, Ohio, into Mary Ann Township, probably in the 1860s. The first reference to them is the 1860 census, after which Daniel had died, or was no longer living with the family. The only way I know his name was Daniel was from the death record of one of his sons. That death record includes that he was from Beaver County, Pennsylvania, which is west of Pittsburgh, and north of Washington County, bordering on the northern tip of West Virginia.

Unfortunately, I have found no census record of this family in earlier censuses at any time in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. There were several Hupp families settled there in the early 1900s, descendants of the patriarch Phillip Hupp, but that does not help identify this family. Due to its proximity to Washington County, it would be possible that Daniel could be a descendant of the patriarch Everhard Hupp, but there is no known connection.

It might be noted that in the 1870 census of Licking County, all of the households of this family in Mary Ann Township had their name spelled "Huff". I checked this name in Beaver County, PA, but didn't find it either.

Daniel and Mary have a great number of descendants, and perhaps most have stayed in the Newark area. My lists are very incomplete, constructed from censuses, tombstones, county records, and obituaries. I have had a few contacts, but the information provided has been limited. And I have not pursued very many leads. That will be for later editions.
