Section 5a

HIGH KNOB - BOTHER KNOB

US 33 to Briery Branch Gap

Parking

  1. North end of section: on US 33, 26 miles west of I-81 Exit 247 on left just into West Virginia, on left. 
  2. South end of section: along side of intersection of VA 924, CR 25, and FDR 85 (no signs identify these roads here).  Follow VA 257 west from I-81 Exit 240, after 24 miles, it becomes VA 924, follow 7 more miles to state line, where intersection is. 
  3. There are a few parking spots along FDR 85 for 2.6 miles north of Briery Branch Gap. 


Shuttle
   North to south:  (low water route) Take US 33 7.7 miles west to Brandywine, WV, turn left on CR 21 (Sugar Grove Road) and go 6 miles, turn left on CR 24 (Little Fork Road) and go 5.4 miles, left on CR 25 (Shenandoah Mountain Road) and go 5.2 miles to Briery Branch Gap.  (high water route) Take US 33 about 15 miles east to VA 613, turn right and go 4 miles to Ottobine, go straight (west) on VA 257 for 3 miles to Briery Branch, VA 257 turns right-go 10 miles (becomes VA 924 in 3 miles).
   South to north:  (low water route) Take CR 25 (Shenandoah Mountain Road) and go 5.2 miles, right on CR 24 (Little Fork Road) and go 5.4 miles, right on CR 21 (Sugar Grove Road) and go 6 miles, right on US 33 in Brandywine, and go 7.7 miles to top of mountain.  (high water route) Take VA 924 east (it becomes VA 257 in about 7 miles) VA 257 6 miles through Briery Branch to Ottobine.  Go straight on VA 613 (VA 257 turns right) and go 4 miles to US 33.  Turn left and go about 15 miles.

Multi-use - Horses and mountain bikes are allowed. There is room for horse trailer turnaround in the parking on US 33 and at the intersection at the south end of this section. 


 
Trail Description, North to South


Miles   Data
 0.0 North end of section on US 33 at VA/WV state line (elev. 3450').  Parking area on WV side, south side of road.  Signboard displays local trails and info about High Knob.  Great Eastern Trail takes trail south from parking area.  This is the yellow-blazed Shenandoah Mountain Trail, which leaves the parking area between guard rails (US 33 & the parking area's). 
 0.8 Intersection with High Knob Trail.  Trail sign says 0.5 miles to High Knob and 3 miles to Brandywine Rec. Area.  Trail to left leads 0.6 mile to High Knob (elev. 4107') with stone fire tower and views of Virginia and West Virginia.  On clear days, 80 miles of the Blue Ridge may be visible.  Trail to right leads down steeply in places about 3 miles to Brandywine Lake.  Shenandoah Mountain Trail (and GET) continues ahead along west side of ridge. 
 1.3 Trail crosses an old road grade coming up from right (use caution here). 
 1.7 Trail switches back to left and ascends with more switchbacks to crest of ridge. 
 1.9 Reach ridge crest and turn right onto jeep road (to left road goes toward High Knob across private land).  Trail sign says 1 mile to High Knob Trail, 2 miles to US 33 West, and 4 miles to Bother Knob. 
 2.1 Road forks and comes back together in about 100 yards. 
 2.2 Reach top of knob (elev. 3870'). 
 2.9 In a field, road forks.  These forks make a loop. 
 3.1 At the far point of the loop, near top of knob, the trail leaves the road as a footpath, continuing along the ridge crest.  (Use care here.)
 4.3 Begin steep climb up a knob. 
 4.5 Reach top of knob.
 5.1 Broad area on top of ridge (suitable for camping).  A jeep trail goes right and descends very steeply 0.2 mile to the end of FDR 85 at Trailhead of Millers Run Trail (no sign). 
 6.3 Bother Knob summit (elev. 4344'), high point of section and highest point on the Great Eastern Trail.  An open field here, but trees surrounding it block view.  Trail continues, bending to the east. 
 7.3 Trail ends on FDR 85A (elev. 4230').  Turn right and follow road. 
 8.2 Intermittent Spring from pipe on right. 
 8.3 Road intersection with FDR 85 (elev. 4040'), forks join.  Continue to left.  (To right FDR 85 leads 0.6 mile to Bother Ridge Trail, and 2.4 miles to Miller Run Trail.) 
 8.7 4-wheel drive road leads left uphill to a campsite and view. 
 9.0 Gated road to left (elev. 3869') leads down Hone Quarry Ridge. 
 10.0 VA 924 at Briery Branch Gap (3700'); south end of section.  Go right a short distance, and follow one-lane paved road uphill to left to continue on GET into section 5b. 


Trail Description, South to North

 0.0 VA 924 at Briery Branch Gap (elev. 3700'); south end of section.  Great Eastern Trail follows unimproved, unsigned road (FDR 85) north. 
 1.0 Gated road to right (elev. 3869') leads down Hone Quarry Ridge. 
 1.3 4-wheel drive road angles back to right and uphill to a campsite and view. 
 1.7 Road forks (elev. 4040').  Take right fork, toward Flagpole Knob.  (To left FDR 85 leads 0.6 mile to Bother Ridge Trail, and 2.6 miles to end of road and head of Miller Run Trail.) 
 1.8 Intermittent spring from pipe on left. 
 2.7 Yellow-blazed Shenandoah Mountain Trail to left (elev. 4230'); follow it. 
 3.7 Bother Knob summit (elev. 4344'), high point of section and highest point on the Great Eastern Trail.  An open field here, but trees surrounding it block view.  Trail continues, bending north. 
 4.9 Broad area on top of ridge (suitable for camping).  A jeep trail goes left and descends very steeply 0.2 mile to end of FDR 85 at Trailhead of Millers Run Trail (no sign). 
 5.5 Top of knob before steep descent. 
 5.7 Bottom of descent. 
 6.9 Near top of knob, arrive at looping jeep road in overgrown field.  Take left fork (right fork works ok, too). 
 7.1 Road forks rejoin; continue on road ahead. 
 7.8 Reach top of knob (elev. 3870'). 
 7.9 Road forks and comes back together in about 100 yards. 
 8.1 Trail turns to left side of ridge, and descends on switchbacks.  Road ahead leads into private land.  Trail sign says 1 mile to High Knob Trail, 2 miles to US 33 West, and 4 miles to Bother Knob. 
 8.3 Last switchback; Trail continues on west side of ridge until end of section. 
 8.7 Trail crosses roadbed coming down from right.  Use caution here. 
 9.2 Intersection with High Knob Trail.  Trail sign says 0.5 miles to High Knob and 3 miles to Brandywine Rec. Area.  Trail to right leads 0.6 mile to High Knob (elev. 4107') with stone fire tower and views of Virginia and West Virginia.  On clear days, 80 miles of the Blue Ridge may be visible.  Trail to left leads down steeply in places about 3 miles to Brandywine Lake.  Shenandoah Mountain NorthTrail (and GET) continues ahead on west side of ridge.
