Parking

 1. North end of section: From I-64 in West Virginia (coming from Virginia: Exit 181, take US 60 west 0.3 mile to WV 92, turn right/ coming eastbound: Exit 175, go to US 60, take US 60 east 5 miles east to WV 92, turn left) and go 15 miles to CR 14 Neola, turn right and go 4.1 miles to CR 14/1, turn left and go 6.4 miles.  At the first intersection after the entrance station, turn right, then right again, and go to Trailhead parking area where the road turns around.    
2. South end of section: From I-64 in West Virginia (coming from Virginia: Exit 181, take US 60 west 0.3 mile to WV 92, turn right/ coming eastbound: Exit 175, go to US 60, take US 60 east 5 miles east to WV 92, turn left) and go 15 miles to CR 14, turn right and go 2.8 miles, parking on right at Laurel Run Road. 

Shuttle       

  North to south: Go back out CR 14/1 6.4 miles to CR 14, go straight on CR 14 and go 1.3 miles, parking on left. 
  South to north: Continue on CR 14 for 1.3 miles to CR 14/1, go straight and go 6.4 miles into Lake Sherwood and find Trailhead parking as described above.

Useful Information
  Emergency - In WV or VA, Dial 9-1-1
  Services - Lake Sherwood: 94 site campground with seasonal flush toilets and showers, water, swimming, fishing.  Dean's Boat Rental at Lake Sherwood: basic concessions (soft drinks, candy bars, some packaged food, ice cream), 9 am-6 pm, closed noon to 1 pm for lunch. 

Trail Description, North to South

 0.0 Trailhead of blue-blazed Upper Meadow Trail at Lake Sherwood, elev. 2695'.  Great Eastern Trail follows Upper Meadow Trail (west) uphill.  Pass picnic tables. 
 0.2 Cross paved CR 14/1. 
 0.7 Footpath ends on dirt road and Upper Meadow Trail continues bearing left on road. 
 1.2 Dirt road makes a sharp left turn.  A sign has an arrow pointing left. 
 1.5 Upper Meadow Trail intersects yellow-blazed Allegheny Trail [701] on crest of Meadow Creek Mountain, elev. 2900'.  GET turns left onto Allegheny Trail, south.  High water route rejoins here from right. 
 1.9 Views of Sherwood Lake to left. 
 2.8 Reach summit on ridge, elev. 3250'. 
 3.1 Cross gravel road with fenced-in tower to right. 
 3.2 Trail leaves jeep trail to left. 
 3.3 Reach Rider Trail, a dirt road.  Turn right, go 100' then turn left on trail.  In about 100 yards, cross intermittent Dilley Run (elev. 2790'). 
 3.5 Trail joins a jeep trail coming in from the right.  Continue on jeep trail to left. 
 4.2 Trail leaves jeep trail, bearing left. 
 8.8 Trail reaches southernmost summit of Meadow Creek Mountain (elev. 3120' on trail).  Trail starts descent to Meadow Creek. 
 9.0 Viewpoint to right toward the southwest. 
 10.5 Trail crosses Meadow Creek over bridge, then emerges on paved CR 14.  Cross CR 14, and trail soon joins a road grade. 
 10.7 Trailhead Parking for Allegheny Trail.  End of section.  GET continues on Allegheny Trail south, going to left toward CR 14 and to right section 7e. 


Trail Description, South to North

 0.0 South end of section, parking by CR 14 (Elev. 2212').  Great Eastern Trail follows Allegheny Trail, which goes west along road grade. 
 0.2 Trail leaves road grade to right, crosses CR 14, then crosses a trail bridge over Meadow Creek and starts to climb up Meadow Creek Mountain. 
 1.7 Trail turns right with viewpoint ahead with views to southwest. 
 1.9 Trail reaches southernmost summit of Meadow Creek Mountain (elev. 3120' on trail).  Trail turns right and follows ridge top. 
 6.5 Trail joins a jeep trail, coming from left.  Continue bearing right. 
 7.2 Trail leaves jeep trail to right. 
 7.4 After descending, reach and cross Dilley Run (elev. 2790') and after about 100 yards, reach Rider Trail, a dirt road.  Go right on Rider Trail about 100', then go left on trail. 
 7.5 Join jeep trail coming from left, bearing right. 
 7.6 Cross gravel road with fenced-in tower to left. 
 7.9 Reach summit on ridge, elev. 3250'. 
 8.8 Views of Lake Sherwood to right. 
 9.2 Intersection with Upper Meadow Trail (elev. 2900'), a grass road, to right.  Allegheny Trail continues ahead.  GET follows Upper Meadow Trail, to right.  High water route continues 0.5 mile on the Allegheny Trail, then follows Meadow Creek Mountain Trail right another 3.5 miles.  This bypasses Lake Sherwood. 
 9.5 Road makes a sharp right turn with an arrow pointing left (for benefit of those going up Upper Meadow Trail). 
 10.0 Upper Meadow Trail leaves road to right (easy to miss).  GET follows trail. 
 10.5 Cross under power line, then cross CR 14/1. 
 10.7 Upper Meadow Trail ends at Trailhead parking area in Picnic Area of Lake Sherwood.  End of section 7d.  GET continues on road ahead into section 7c.
