Parking

 1.  North end of section: From I-64 in West Virginia (coming from Virginia: Exit 181, take US 60 west 0.3 mile to WV 92, turn right/coming eastbound: Exit 175, go to US 60, take US 60 east 5 miles east to WV 92, turn left) and go 15 miles to CR 14, turn right and go 2.8 miles, Allegheny Trail parking on right. 
 2.  South end of section: From I-64 in West Virginia (coming from Virginia: Exit 181, take US 60 west 0.3 mile to WV 92, turn right/ coming eastbound: Exit 175, go to US 60, take US 60 east 5 miles east to WV 92, turn left) and go 4.2 miles to CR 15/4 (Slash Lick Road), and go 1.2 miles to gate.  Find parking at gate, careful not to block gate. 

Shuttle

  North to south: Go back out CR 14 2.8 miles to WV 92, turn left and go 11 miles to CR 15/4, turn left and go 3.3 miles. 
  South to north: Go back out CR 15/4 1.2 miles to WV 92, turn right and go 11 miles to CR 13, turn right and go 2.8 miles.

 0.0 From parking along CR 14 near Laurel Run (elev.  2212'), Great Eastern Trail and Allegheny Trail goes toward CR 14 east, crossing Laurel Run on the right side of CR 14. 
 0.1 Allegheny Trail enters woods on right on woods road. 
 0.4 Trail joins Laurel Run road (keep left) with ford of Laurel Run on right.  Trail follows road to left. 
 0.5  Trail bridge over Laurel Run. 
 0.8 Road fords Laurel Run, while trail leaves road to right. 
 1.0 Pass through a wildlife field. 
 1.4 Trail returns to road, after fords. 
 1.6 Pass through a wildlife field. 
 2.6 Pass through a wildlife field. 
 2.9 Pass through a wildlife field (largest in this section). 
 3.1 Trail turns right, away from creek, passes through a wildlife field, then joins jeep trail, to left. 
 4.0-4.5 Four crossings of Laurel Run. 
 4.5 Trail turns to left and climbs with a few switchbacks up ridge. 
 5.0 Trail reaches crest of ridge (state line, elev. 3000').  Sign indicating Allegheny Mountain and Eastern Continental Divide. 
 5.2 Saddle of ridge; Trail turns right up knob. 
 5.6 Trail reaches high point (elev. 3040') before summit of knob, and turns right. 
 5.8 Road and Trail intersection.  The road to right is gated.  Trail continues across intersection.

 7.4 Blue-blazed trail leads right >0.1 mile to water source. 
 7.5 Reach summit of Smith Knob, elev. 3330'.  Graham Shelter to right.  Trail descends from this point.

 9.4 Road fork joins from left coming down from knob. 
 9.6 Reach high point on ridge, elev. 3120'; Trail turns off road to right. 
 9.9 Trail bends left, and continues across some ravines, with uphill to left. 
 10.8 Intersection with forest road; Trail follows road to right.   
 11.0 Trail leaves old road to left. 
 11.4  Cross small stream and join forest road, to left. 
 11.9 Dirt road comes to a "T" with another dirt road (Slash Lick Road), elev. 2500".  GET goes right on this road.  Allegheny Trail continues to left, 3.7 miles to Jerrys Run Road off I-64 Exit 2 in Virginia.  Beyond I-64 there is a gap in the Allegheny Trail with road walk not possible along I-64.  That is why GET goes off the Allegheny Trail, at least until the gap is filled.  GET rejoins Allegheny Trail at Laurel Branch, WV. 
 13.5 Pond on left of road. 
 14.0 Reach gate across road, elev. 2190".  Beyond this is car-accessible.   End of section.  GET continues on Slash Lick Road into Section 7f. 

 

Trail Description, South to North

 0.0 Gate on Slash Lick Run, elev. 2190'.  Be sure not to park as to block the gate. 
 0.5 Pond to right of the road. 
 2.1 Intersection with dirt road going left; also with Allegheny Trail (elev. 2500').  GET continues left on dirt road going uphill.  Follow yellow blazes of Allegheny Trail going north.  Allegheny Trail goes south straight ahead, and it is 3.7 miles to Jerrys Run Road off I-64 Exit 1 in Virginia. 
 2.6 Trail leaves road to right, crossing a small stream. 
 3.0 Trail joins old forest road, go right. 
 3.2 Trail leaves old road to left. 
 4.1 Trail bends right, going on ridge crest. 
 4.4 At high point on ridge, elev. 3120', trail turns left on old forest road. 
 4.6 Road forks; trail takes left fork, downhill (right fork goes uphill). 
 4.8 Low point, elev. 2820',
 6.1 Trail leaves old road to left. 
 6.3 View to right of mountains to south. 
 6.5 Reach summit of Smith Knob, elev. 3330'.  Graham Shelter to left. 
 6.6 Blue-blazed trail leads left (more than 0.1 mile) to water source. 
 7.3 View to right of mountains to south. 
 7.7 View of field to left. 
 8.2 Road and Trail intersection.  The road across is gated.  Trail continues across intersection, right of the gate. 
 8.4 Trail reaches high point (elev. 3040') before summit of knob, and turns left.

 10.9 Trail turns right off forest road, toward Laurel Run, and passes through a wildlife field. 
 11.1 Pass through a wildlife field (largest in this section).  Take care to find where trail exits this field, as it can be quite overgrown, and there are many alternate ways. 
 11.4 Pass through a wildlife field. 
 12.4 Pass through a wildlife field. 
 12.6 Trail leaves road to left, avoiding fords of Laurel Run. 
 13.0 Pass through a wildlife field. 
 13.2 Trail rejoins the road; the road fords Laurel Run to right, Trail follows road to left.

 13.6 Trail leaves road to right just before ford on another forest road. 
 13.9 Just before forest road reaches CR 14, Trail turns to left.  The Trail joins CR 14 to cross Laurel Run, then turns back left.
