VA 609/FDR 125 to US 220
 7.9 miles, 3.3 miles Road walk, 0.6 mile paved
 

Parking

 1. North end of section: From I-64 in Virginia Exit 16, take US 220 north 25.5 miles (Warm Springs), turn right on VA 39 and go about 6 miles, turn left on VA 609 (Dry Run Road) and go 1.8 miles.  Pullover spot on east side of VA 609 0.1 mile north of intersection of FDR 1325. 
 2. Old Piney Mountain Trailhead: From 1., take FDR 1325 0.8 mile to "T", go right (FDR 465) and go 1.9 miles. 
 3. South end of section: From I-64 in Virginia Exit 16, take US 220 north 30 miles, just north of Muddy Creek on east side is a large pullover.  This parking is 0.2 mile north of the intersection with VA 614, which is the north end of section. 

Shuttle

 North to south: Take VA 609 south 1.8 miles to VA 39, turn right and go about 6 miles to US 220, turn right and go 4.5 miles. 
 South to north: Take US 220 south 4.5 miles to VA 39, turn left and go 6 miles to VA 609 (Dry Run Road), turn left and go 1.8 miles.

Multi-use - Horses and mountain bikes are allowed.  There is room for horse trailer turnaround on US 220 north of Muddy Run. 


Trail Description, North to South

Miles   Data
 0.0 North end of section, unsigned intersection of VA 609 (Dry Run Road) and FDR 1325 (elev. 1690').  There are dumpsters on the left side of FDR 1325.  Great Eastern Trail follows FDR 1325. 
 0.8 FDR 1325 comes to a "T".  This is FDR 465 (Bath Alum Ridge Road).  Take road to right. 
 1.9 Cross Wolf Run, crossing the road. 
 2.7 On sharp left curve, find trailhead of Old Pine Mountain Trail.  Turn left on trail leading up ridge (elev. 2100').  This trail was abandoned by the USFS and is rather overgrown, especially with Mountain Laurel.  It trends left as it climbs the ridge with no switchbacks. 
 3.6 Reach blue-blazed Piney Mountain Trail at crest of ridge (elev. 2840').  Turn right on Piney Mountain Trail.  To left it is about 3 miles to Jordan Run.   
 4.0 Cross FDR 358, Jordan Run Road (elev. ~2850'). 
 5.0 Reach crest of Warm Springs Mountain and Trail (elev. ~3580').  Follow Trail to left.  To right on abandoned trail it is 0.5 mile to House Rock, elev. 3781'. 
 5.5 Trail turns right (elev. 3650', highest point of this section).  Ahead 0.2 mile on abandoned trail is summit of Bonner Mountain, elev. 3690'. Before long, Piney Mountain Trail descends steeply. 
 7.3 Piney Mountain Trail ends on VA 614, Muddy Run Road, elev. 2180'.  GET follows VA 614 to left. 
 7.9 VA 614 ends on US 220, elev. 2073'.  South end of section (parking 0.2 mile to right).  GET follows US 220 to left into Section 7a.  Future plans are to put GET onto Muddy Run Road, which will go off US 220 to the right. 


Trail Description, South to North

Miles   Data
 0.0 Intersection of US 220 (Sam Sneed Highway) and VA 614 (Muddy Run Road), elev. 2073'.  Great Eastern Trail follows VA 614 (east). 
 0.6 Blue-blazed Piney Mountain Trail to right, elev. 2180'.  GET follows Piney Mountain Trail to right, sometimes climbing steeply. 
 2.4 On crest of Warm Springs Mountain (elev. 3650', highest point on this section), turn left.  To right it is 0.2 mile on abandoned trail to summit of Bonner Mountain, elev. 3690'.
 2.9 Piney Mountain Trail and GET turn right. Ahead on abandoned trail it is 0.5 mile to House Rock, elev. 3781'.  House Rock is about 30' high and wide, no views.  There is a view east along the way there. 
 3.9 Cross FDR 358, elev. ~2850'. 
 4.3 Intersection with unmarked Old Piney Mountain Trail to left, elev. 2840'.  GET follows Old Piney Mountain Trail to left, downhill.  This trail has been abandoned by the USFS and is rather overgrown, especially with Mountain Laurel. 
 5.2 Old Piney Mountain Trail reaches FDR 465 (Bath Alum Ridge Road), elev. 2100'.  GET follows FDR 465 to right. 
 6.0 Cross Wolf Run, crossing the road. 
 7.1 Unmarked road intersection.  This is FDR 1325.  Turn left. 
 7.9 FDR 1325 ends on VA 609 (Dry Run Road) with dumpsters on right (elev. 1690').  North end of section.  GET continues to left on VA 609 into section 6d.
