Section 3b
BIG SCHLOSS
Waites Run Road to Wolf Gap
9.9 miles

Parking

  1. North end of section at Waites Run.  Go 19 miles west of I-81 Exit 296 on VA 55 (US 48) to Furnace Road (CR 5/4) (just after the gas station) and turn left.  Go 0.6 mile to T-intersection; turn right on North Mountain Road (CR 5) and then left on Waites Run Road (CR 5/1).  Pass a swimming pool and tennis courts.  Go 5.2 miles on Waites Run Road and just before crossing Waites Run the third time, the Tuscarora Pond Run Trail comes down from the right.  Park on the left side of the road on either side of the bridge.
  2. South end of section at Wolf Gap.  Go 11.6 miles west of I-81 Exit 279 on VA 675 (at VA 42 in Columbia Furnace, turn right, then left, then left again, staying on VA 675).  Wolf Gap is on right at state line.  A parking area is within the loop on the right. 

Shuttle

  North to south:  Go back on Waites Run Road (CR 5/1) to 5.2 miles to North Mountain Road (CR 5) and turn left.  Follow it 0.9 mile to WV 55 & 259 & US 48 and turn left.  Go 0.2 mile and turn left on Trout Run Road (CR 23/10) and follow it 13.5 miles to state line; Wolf Gap parking is on left. 
 South to north:  Exit Wolf Gap area and turn right into West Virginia on Trout Run Road (CR 23/10).  Go 13.5 miles to WV 55 & 259 & US 48 and turn right.  In 0.2 mile turn right onto North Mountain Road (CR 5) and go 0.9 mile.  Turn right on Waites Run Road (CR 5/1) and go 5.2 miles and just before crossing Waites Run for the third time, find Tuscarora Pond Run Trail on right.

Multi-use -- Horses and mountain bikes are allowed.  Horse trailer turn-around is possible in Wolf Creek Campground. 

 
Trail Description, North to South

 0.0 At junction of Tuscarora Trail (from Great North Mountain) onto Waites Run Road, turn right and 40 yd after crossing bridge over Waites Run turn left. Leave road and proceed upstream following left bank of Waites Run (elev. 1510'). Next 2.5 miles is also known as Pond Run Trail [1013.2]. 
 0.3 Campsite to left by Waites Run.
 0.5 Cross Pond Run about 0.2 mile upstream from its junction with Waites Run. There are seven more crossings of Pond Run before reaching top. 
 1.4 For eighth and last time, cross Pond Run and continue to follow its left bank. 
 2.4 Cross tributary of Pond Run. Area is marshy with beautiful fern and moss, even in dry weather. 
 2.5 After crossing marshy area on rugged boardwalk, reach intersection with yellow-blazed Halfmoon Trail [1003] (elev. 2720'), which goes right. (To right, Halfmoon Trail descends to Trout Run Valley in 3 miles. Straight ahead, across campsite, in 0.1 mile is a view of wooded Trout Valley and surrounding mountains.) Turn left and in 80 yd cross another boardwalk over Half Moon Run. 
 2.8 Road which the trail follows turns to right, uphill. Tuscarora/GET continues ahead as footpath. 
 3.1 Pass source of Pond Run on left. 
 3.9 Four-way intersection (elev. 3120'). Tuscarora Trail turns left (0.6 mile to Little Stony Creek Trail and Sugar Knob Cabin(locked PATC cabin); 5.6 miles to FDR 1863.) GET breaks off Tuscarora Trail at this point, continuing south (ahead) on orange-blazed Mill Mountain Trail [1004]. To right is road from mile 2.8. 
 4.2 Campsite on left. 
 4.5 To right 125' is site of airline beacon at summit of Mill Mountain (elev. 3293', high point of this section). Footers and maintenance building remain. After this in 100 yds it is 100' to left to campsite. 
 5.3 Sandstone Spring (elev. 2890') on left of trail. 
 6.0 To right, it is 150' to rock with view to west. 
 7.0 Trail intersection: Big Schloss Cutoff Trail leads 1.9 miles to left to FDR 92. There is a campsite on the left side of this trail. 
 7.4 View of Big Schloss ahead. 
 8.0 Trail intersection (elev. 2770'): White-blazed Big Schloss Trail leads 0.3 mile to top of Big Schloss (elev. 2964') with cliffs and views in almost all directions
 9.0 Shortly after passing rocks with views to east, (Elev. 2850') Trail starts to descend to the right of the ridge. There is a campsite on left side of trail. 
 9.8 Mill Mountain trail ends at the Wolf Gap Campground. Continue on road to the right. 
 9.9 Reach Va. 675 at Wolf Gap (elev. 2230') at end of Section 3b. GET continues into section 3c across road onto Tibbet Knob Trail.

Trail Description, South to North

 0.0 At Wolf Gap (elev. 2230') on state line, Great Eastern Trail follows road into campground. In 50 yd continue ahead. Parking is on right after campground road goes off to right.
 0.1 As the campground road curves right, GET follows the orange-blazed Mill Mountain Trail [1004]. 
 0.9 The trail arrives at the crest of the ridge (Elev. 2850'). There is a campsite on right of trail. After this, the trail passes rock slab to right with views east. 
 1.9 Trail intersection (elev. 2770'): White-blazed Big Schloss Trail leads right 0.3 mile to top of Big Schloss (elev. 2964') with cliffs and views east, west, and north. Pass to left of Big Schloss. 
 2.5 View of Big Schloss behind. 
 2.9 Trail intersection: Big Schloss Cutoff Trail leads 1.9 miles to right to FDR 92. There is a campsite on the left side of this trail. 
 3.9 To left, it is 150' to rock with view to west. 
 4.6 Sandstone Spring (elev. 2890') on right of trail. 
 5.4 To right it is 100' to a campsite. After this, it is 100 yds to where to left 125' is site of airline beacon at summit of Mill Mountain (elev. 3293', high point of this section). Footers and maintenance building remain. 
 5.6 Campsite to right. 
 6.0 End of Mill Mountain Trail (elev. 3120') at four-way intersection. Blue-blazed Tuscarora Trail [1013.2] goes ahead and right. Great Eastern Trail follows Tuscarora Trail ahead. To right, Tuscarora Trail goes 0.6 mile to Little Stony Creek Trail and Sugar Knob Cabin (locked PATC cabin); 5.6 miles to FDR 1863. To left is unmarked road. 
 6.8 Pass source of Pond Run on right. 
 7.1 Unmarked road comes in from left; continue straight. 
 7.4 Reach an area that is marshy with beautiful fern and moss even in dry weather. After crossing rugged boardwalk over start of Halfmoon Run, reach intersection with yellow-blazed Halfmoon Trail [1003] (elev. 2720'). To left is campsite and beyond it is a trail which leads 0.1 mile for view of forested Trout Run valley and surrounding mountains. Tuscarora/GET turns right, crossing another boardwalk. This trail is also known as Pond Run Trail. Half Moon Trail continues straight and descends to Trout Run Valley in 3 mi. 
 7.5 Cross tributary of Pond Run. Ahead, begin to follow left bank of Pond Run. 
 8.5 Cross Pond Run and follow right bank. Seven more crossings of Pond Run before reaching Waites Run Road. 
 9.4 For eighth and last time, cross Pond Run about 0.2 mi upstream from junction with Waites Run. 
 9.6 Campsite to right by Waites Run. 
 9.9 Waites Run Road. Turn right, cross bridge over Waites Run and proceed 70 yd. End of Section 3b. Great Eastern Trail/Tuscarora Trail turns left onto old forest road into Section 3a.
